Western Hognose Snakes
WHY WESTERN HOGNOSE?
Western hognose are becoming the best pet snake you can own. Gentle disposition, ease of husbandry, low maintenance, and variety are all reasons to own one or many. For the past 15 years I've kept and raised everything from chameleons, geckos, and turtles to boas, pythons, and colubrids. After taking my interest in reptiles as far as opening my own pet store and amassing a sizeable collection at home, i realized my hobby was turning into a job. Time for a fresh start. I moved 850 miles away, sold the store, and downsized my collection into something i can manage myself and actually enjoy. I found that in the space that a stack of 4 six foot cages with retics in them took up i could put several rack systems and easily house 60 hognose snakes with room to spare. Cage cleaning went from a giant chore (15 foot retics) to something as easy as swapping a sweater box drawer.
I love hognose! The next factor in becoming a popular pet is variety. There are so many emerging color morphs of western hognose now, they rival ball pythons in color selection. Now talk about size. My average male is 15 inches in length, average female 24 to 30. Sure beats wrestling a retic during cage cleanings. Easy to breed, similar to most new world colubrids. Double and triple clutches can be produced, with an average clutch size around 15 to 20 eggs. All in all, the western hognose is a great snake, whether your a beginner or a seasoned breeder.
